Rocket Fizz – Green Apple Jalapeno

Friday, November 18, 2011 at 1:21PM

Oh hi, didn’t see you there! This is Aaron… you know, the Soda Jerk. Today I have the great fortune of drinking a soda from our old buddies at Old 52. They aren’t called Old 52 because they’re our old buddies; life is just funny like that sometimes. Any-doodle, Old 52 has sent us this delicious bottle of Rocket Fizz Green Apple Soda! Mmmm MMMM! Being our old buddies, Old 52 knows how much I love green apple soda, especially when it’s sweetened with cane sugar. This is apparently some sort of Mexican green apple soda because it has some sort of funny word after the flavor “Green Apple”. The funny word printed on the bottle is Jalapeno. Have you ever heard of anything so crazy? I haven’t. Crazy! Any-scoot, I took German in High School like the good little Texan I am, so you and I can experience this crazy ride called Rocket Fizz Green Apple Jalapeno (tee hee, it still makes me giggle) together. Bottoms up!

Yowza! That certainly smells like our old friend Green Apple! It’s like picking a green apple off the tree and slicing it open like a red delicious apple. Something spooky is going on here though. Every time I smell it the inside of my nose parts feel a little burning sensation. Ah well, that must be the fresh mountain air that was used to grow these delicious green creatures. Time for drinkin!

What the French, toast! It seems our “old friends” at Old 52 have pulled the wool over our eyes! Rocket Fizz Green Apple Jalapeno does have the delicious, delicious taste of fresh grown green apples, but after that it goes straight to heck… literally! After I felt my thirst was quenched the back of my throat burst into flames causing enough pain to really cheese me off! I guess this is what Jalapeno means in Spanish… trick soda! As much as it hurts me I still go back to it so that I might enjoy the green apple flavoring they nailed down so well you’d swear it was glued. RASPBERRIES, THAT STINGS! Each flipping sip is followed up by the fires of Mordor, and just when I think I’m getting used to it the flames flare up once again making me regret my last decision. I thought that the carbonation bubbles were also my old friends, but they don’t seem be on my side either. The bubbles just kind of add more sizzle to the flame. Is no one on my side? Oh yeah, the green apple is! One second while I go use the internet then double check my information on the encyclopedia, one can never be too safe, on what a Jalapeno is.

Well shoot me in the face with a sling shot of mud. Did you know a Jalapeno is a pepper? Now that I think about it every time they talked about them in the show Gargoyles they were in a rather “spicy” situation. It just goes to show you that you can never doubt Goliath. With that said who would ruin a perfectly good soda with a pepper… especially when you can’t even taste the pepper itself, just the heat. I think if I were to make this soda again I’d probably add more jalapeno flavoring to it and not worry so much about the burn factor, but what do I know… I’m just a bear.

Verdict – Buy a Bottle… for the sake of our old friend green apple

~A

You’ll never find something more fiery than Twist.

Toothpicks are considered one of the oldest dental cleaning implements. In the past, toothpicks have been made from a variety of materials including woods and bronze as well as silver. Some toothpicks were even decorated with a variety of different stones. J.P. Cooley and Silas Noble are the very first manufacturers of toothpicks and their toothpick generating machine was patented in the early 1870s. Today, toothpicks are understood to have, not only dental benefits, but health benefits too. In particular, toothpicks of the flavored variety make for excellent methods to quit smoking, and flavored toothpicks are also appreciated in weight management efforts.

Consumer’s today can purchase flavored toothpicks in a variety of intense, extreme flavors including strawberry toothpicks, cinnamint toothpicks, wintergreen toothpicks, spearmint toothpicks. Flavasticks flavored toothpicks are multi-sensational supplying the consumer with a hot, sweet, calming, soothing, and all natural taste experience. The lasting flavor from our products is a delight to the mouth, is good for the teeth and gums, and satisfies one’s cravings. Cinnamon extract, Mint extract, and Wintergreen are considered natural antiseptics which freshen breath and help consumers maintain a healthy mouth and smile. Finally, from their toothpicks one can derive appetite curbing benefits, alleviate heartburn, alleviate indigestion, and stimulate the mind.

Ask Kevin (the former owner of Rocket Fizz Vegas) what his favorite cream soda is, and without any hesitation, he will point you to Virgil’s Cream Soda.

Virgil’s cream soda uses some of the same high quality ingredients that many of the soda at Rocket Fizz Vegas share. Cane sugar for a sweetener, real vanilla, and other natural ingredients.

The vanilla is imported from Madagascar (which is apparently famous for their vanilla and their lemurs). Virgil’s is famous for brewing their sodas. Because it is brewed, Virgil’s cream soda is nice and smooth. The flavors all have a chance to blend together. The vanilla flavor is strong, but not crazy overpowering. Virgil’s cream soda is light on carbonation, and medium on bite. All these factors together come together for a very good cream soda.

What is your favorite cream soda?

If you’ve never seen Beetlejuice, stop whatever you are doing RIGHT NOW, and go watch it.

Now, for everyone else, remember that scene where Beetlejuice uses a candy bar to lure a fly to it’s death?

Fly-Bait

I assumed that the Zagnut bar was some sort of Hollywood created candy bar name, until I saw real Zagnut bars lining the shelves of Rocket Fizz Las Vegas. As soon as I realized that the Zagnut bar was real, I had to try one.

The package has changed a little bit from what you see in the movie.

It’s a simple wrapper, with a very good description of what is inside – “Crunchy Peanut Butter – Toasted Coconut”. And that is what you get. When you open the wrapper, you may be a bit surprised at what you see on the inside.

Its like a flaky, naked Butterfinger

No, the chocolate has not been left off. That’s just the way this candy bar rolls. It’s sort of like a naked butterfinger, sprinkled with roasted coconut. Breaking it apart, it has a very different crumble than a butterfinger.

If you've ever tasted one of these, your mouth should be watering right about now.

There are many similarities to a Butterfinger, since both are crunchy peanut butter based. The inside of the Zagnut Bar is more loosely packed. It isn’t quite as dense. This means that when you bite into one of these little guys, the layers separate in your mouth, into a mass of crumbly goodness. The roasted coconut outside and the super crumbly center combine for something pretty amazing, and very different from a Butterfinger. Coconut and peanut go together really well in this candy bar. I still don’t know what the heck a “Zag” is.

This time of the year has us itching for something sweet.

Now, since we all want candy, and often feel guilty buying candy for ourselves, we think it is a great time of the year to give candy gifts to your friend. You could give your friends, co-workers, or family, a really sweet gift this year. Here’s what to do.

Make a list of the folks in your office or family

Think about what sorts of time or region specific candy the people on your list enjoyed when they could trick or treat without feeling profound shame.

Come into Rocket Fizz Las Vegas and find your list’s childhood memories in a wrapper

Make a nice basket or gift wrap a box of the candies

Present the gift

Bask in the rays of pure love bestowed upon you by the recipients.

We think this could turn into a big thing, so be a trend-setter in your family/office and come in today.

At Rocket Fizz Las Vegas, we have some fantastic regional candies. Today’s candy review comes to us from our neighbors to the north. No, not those crazy Canadians, we are talking about Idahoites (Idahoans, Idahoes? We don’t know).

It has eyes on the wrapper, but not the creepy kind. These are the kind that sprout roots!

I hear that our potato loving friends north of us love their potatoes so much that they wanted their candy to be more potato shaped. I like using the word “potato” as many times as possible in sentences. Anyhow, normal candy apparently didn’t do it for them, so we get

It looks just like a potato (If a potato were able to grow fur)

It’s a nice sized candy bar, shaped like a conventional candy bar and potato’s love child. On the outside is some nicely toasted coconut flakes, with a crumbly dark chocolate shell. When you get to the inside, you’ve got some really great marshmallow. The marshmallow inside is coco flavored, and has a fantastic smooth and fluffy texture.

Mmm, soft, smooth coco flavored insides. Wait, this is supposed to be some sort of candy potato, right?

So, the potato theme of the candy bar really only goes as far as the wrapper. It has very little (read: none) potato flavor, so it is actually good! If you are from Idaho, you already know about this little gem, but for the rest of us, it’s a great candy, hidden in a deceptive wrapper.

Today we are going to review another classic candy that was invented way back in the 1920s. The Pearson Bun was invented around the same time that rockets, penicillin, and traffic lights were created. Pearson’s Caramel Buns are a regional favorite in the mid-west.

Flappers were all over Pearson's Bun

This venerable candy has persisted throughout the ages, and can be enjoyed by Rocket Fizz Las Vegas patrons today.

When you open up a Pearson’s Caramel Bun, you may be a bit offset by the presentation.

The shape may be amorphous, but the flavor is top notch. This is known in the industry as a "plop".

Pearson’s caramel Bun bars are made of milk chocolate, peanuts, fondant, and caramel. Let’s analyze this baby from the inside out.

It was harder than you'd think to cut this little guy in half, but here you can see all the layers.

The caramel in this bar is nice and dark. The longer you cook sugar, the darker the caramel gets. The caramel layer is quite rich, with the pure sweetness of caramel, along with something more complex, almost smoky in the flavor. The caramel layer is extremely smooth, which contrasts well with the rest of the bar.

The fondant layer is maple flavored, I think. It looks a lot like the maple fondant layer in the Maple Bun, but it is just thick enough to add a little complexity to the bar. The fondant layer melts instantly in your mouth.

The chocolate on the bun bar is not the super milky milk chocolate used in many of today’s candies. It is definitely a bit more complex than that. There is a slight bittersweet quality to the chocolate, which is great, because it offsets the sweetness of the caramel a bit.

Finally, the peanuts on this bar really add to the experience. The addition of saltiness to the sweet ties the bar together and makes it really sing.

For folks from the mid-west where this candy plop is a staple, this candy needs no review. For everyone who hasn’t tried this fantastic candy, we really recommend that you come in today and pick a few up.
